What the Newlands brief called for
The client wanted one everyday bag that could do a bit of everything on short and longer walks. It had to be light enough for summer use in Cape Town, easy to clip on and off, and tidy enough to wear with a simple uniform. The main ask was practical access, because stopping to dig through a larger bag was slowing down the routine.
Newlands can be busy around school runs, park walks and early morning routes, so the bag also needed to sit flat and not swing about while moving. We kept the shape slim, with enough room for the usual carry items but no wasted space.
- Client type: independent dog walker
- Town: Newlands, Cape Town
- Use case: daily walking rounds, treat storage, keys, phone and small cash
- Look: clean, understated, easy to pair with work clothes
Why a slim canvas belt bag made sense
Canvas was the right choice for this brief because it is lighter than leather, easier to wipe down and more practical for regular outdoor use. The client spends time in sun, dust and occasional coastal moisture, so we focused on a material that would not feel heavy by mid morning. The build needed to be comfortable for several hours at a time, not just a quick trip.
We also kept the profile low so it could be worn across the body or around the waist, depending on the day. That flexibility matters when you are handling leads, opening gates and carrying small items at once. The zips are easy to reach with one hand, which helps when the other hand is busy with a dog lead.
- Canvas body for light daily carry
- Low profile shape to reduce bounce while walking
- Quick access front compartment for treats
- Secure main compartment for phone and keys
What we supplied and adjusted
We supplied a slim canvas belt bag with a wide adjustable strap, a secure zip opening and a compact internal layout. The client asked for space for a phone, house keys, dog treats and a small roll of waste bags, so we mapped the inside to keep those items separate. A small divider helped stop keys rubbing against the phone screen.
We also checked the strap fit so it could be worn over a jacket or light shirt without digging in. The stitching lines were reinforced at the stress points, especially around the strap anchors and zip ends. On the first fit check we made a small adjustment to the strap length, which improved comfort straight away.
- Approximate size: 22 cm wide x 14 cm high x 5 cm deep
- Material: durable canvas with wipe clean finish
- Closure: zip top with quick access front pocket
- Carry options: waist or crossbody wear
Timeline from first chat to handover
The full turnaround took three weeks. Week one was for the brief, item list and sizing notes. Week two covered assembly, finishing and fit testing. Week three was used for the final check, strap adjustment and handover. That schedule worked well because the client needed something ready before a busy walking schedule picked up again.
The order was kept simple but specific. We focused on function first, then tidied up the fine details so the bag looked smart enough for daily client-facing work. There was no need for extra bulk or decorative extras, just a neat piece that could be used from day one.
- Week 1: brief, carry list and layout planning
- Week 2: build, stitching and internal checks
- Week 3: fit adjustment and handover
Results on the ground in Newlands
The finished bag gave the client faster access to the things used most often on the route. Treats were easier to reach without stopping, keys stayed separate from the phone and the strap sat comfortably for long walks. The slim shape also meant it did not get in the way when bending, tying leads or opening gates.
The client reported that it felt much more practicaly than carrying a loose bag or using jacket pockets. It also helped keep the day organised, which matters when you are moving between homes, parks and footpaths. Because the bag stayed compact, it remained comfortable even on warmer Cape Town days.
- Faster access to treats and keys
- Less fumbling during walks and handovers
- More comfortable than pockets or a bulky shoulder bag
- Cleaner day to day carry for a client-facing role
What we would do again for a similar order
If we were making the same bag again for a dog walker in Cape Town, we would keep the slim shape and the simple pocket layout. That combination suited the work exactly. We would also keep the adjustable strap, because people wear these bags in different ways depending on the route, clothing and weather.
For similar orders, we would ask three things upfront: what items need to fit, how the bag will be worn and whether the user wants easy wipe-down care or a softer feel. That keeps the build practical from the start and avoids overcomplicating the piece. For outdoor work near the coast, simple finishes age better and are easier to maintain.
- Keep the carry list tight and specific
- Confirm strap wear style before cutting
- Use materials that handle daily use and light moisture
- Prioritise comfort for long wear periods
